READ ABOUT GREAT RECEPTION BY MR. ANDREADES, THE SF CONSUL GENERAL OF GREECE, THE HOST-COUNTRY OF THE UPCOMING 30TH WORLD CONFERENCE OF ISME'2012
|
On November 13, 2010 Ms. R. Gutman attended the very meaningful event, organized by the AJC (American Jewish Committee) and Greek Consulate, personally represented by the SF Consul General, at the Peninsula JCC (Jewish Community Center) in Forster City, San Francisco Bay Area, CA, USA: "JEWS OF SALONIKI", the presentation by Michael Nissim (born in Saloniki), followed by the inspiring musical performance of Greek and original music by the music duo "Teslim". Ms. R. Gutman enjoyed the company of her friend, piano student and music aficionado, as well as famous neuroscientist Prof. Maya Shelly.

With Mr. Joannis Andreades, Consul General of Greece and his charming wife, at the musical event, dedicated to the Holocaust in Saloniki, Foster City, JCC, 11.13.2010 |
|
|
The presentation shined the light on the tragic "NEVER AGAIN!" events that took place in Saloniki during the World War II, commemorating the innocent lives of over 50, 000 Jews that perrished for no reason in German camps, thus destroying the vibrant and thriving Jewish community. (The current residents of Thessaloniki fondly maintain the Museum of Jewish Culture in the city.) The personal participation of Mr. Ionnis Andreades, SF Consul General made the event particularly meaningful and added special significance to the subject of so much needed peace and tolerance between the people of different backgrounds and cultures that is a great foundation for the prosperous collaborations of all kinds.
|
|
Also, the presentation high-lighted the fact of unique tolerance, collaboration and warm friendship between the local residents of the City of Saloniki from various national and religious bachgrounds both in the past and in the present. Musical performance facilitated as the best living and lasting illustration of co-contributing, friendly co-existing cultures in Greece.

This theme was particularly resonant to the general purpose of UNESCO-sponsored ISME (Int'l Society for Music Education), the oldest and the most acclaimed organization in the field.
Ms. R. Gutman also shared the images from the old photo-book, depicting the art, unearthed and preserved in the museum of the city where she was born - "Kerkinitida", founded by the ancient Greek navigators on the shore of Crimean Peninsula, by the Black Sea, influencing the life of many following generations of that community.

With Polyvios Androutsos, Chair of upcoming 30th World Conference, Greece, 2010 |
|
| Ms. Gutman was extremelly pleased to find very welcoming, encouraging and supportive attitude shared by the official Greek representatives and the members of the local Greek community. Now and in turn, she is glad and inspired to share this welcoming spirit of Greece with everybody, who would be invited to join her at the upcoming World Forum for the Music Education in Greece, as a result of collaborative performances and presentations that are in the process of preparation and under way.
We are looking forward to all the great opportunities of ISME, Thessaloniki'2012!

| We've begun our 1st actions of Int'l Campaign for Advocacy for Music Education through Brain/Music Research during the events of the 28th World Conference of ISME (www.ISME.ORG), held in Bologna, Italy, in Summer of 2008. Prior to the Conference, Ms. Rozalina Gutman was invited to participate in CEPROM of ISME (Commission for Education of Professional Musician), held in the City of Spilamberto. Her esteemed colleagues from all over the World wholeheartedly supported these efforts. But the most touching was the way the "non"-musicians-locals resonated to the music-related issues, including the City's Mayor (on the photo!), who simply did not appear to be just an administrator-bystander, but rather was helping carrying out various tasks during the events. Something special must be said about the love for music that runs through Italian blood... More about musical Summer'2008 in Northern Italy.

What is YOUR personal role in the process of the Creativity-based evolution of Humankind?
Ever wondered why your doctors and nurses care more about liability than livability of you, their patient, suffering from pain and agony? Ever thought why people around you don't have enough awareness to care about critical issues that only appear to be beyond their own daily livelihood?
Surprisingly, the neuroscientists uncover that the answers to these and other similarly complex questions are hidden in the poor structure of our school curricula that does not address such capacities as emotional intelligence, meta-cognition, creative imagination and other advanced mental skills.
At the time when our civilization is at a very vulnerable point, it is the time to examine the "inconvenient truth" about the driving forces of the processes and paradigms, leading to some significant self-destructive actions of human race. Our individual mind as well as our collective conscience are at play, when we impact both - our inner and our outer environment, sharing it with each other on our small planet.
That is why, it is critical to understand that "the educational curriculum is a mind-altering device" (Prof. Eisner) that impacts the landscape of both - an individual, as well as the human conscience, both today and for the generations to come. And, if curricula lacks the balance in the course structure, it creates the minds that are deficient of the vital capacities and skills. Music and music education has been known for centuries for its immense power to effect people in a positive and holistic ways. In some countries and communities, the awareness about such values still thrives (see the portion of THE INT'L SYMPOSIUM'S ABSTRACTS, by Estonian master-educator Prof. Ene Kangron at the recent ISME World Conference), but sadly - more and more rarely. Due to addressing fine emotional nuances, ability for abstract thinking (incl. in the early age), variety of creative skills for "thinking outside of the box" and other advanced cognition capacities, music education provides the cumulative opportunity to address such essential for our collective humankind issue as our collective survival as a species. (A number of AUTHORS provide substantial scientific evidence about musical abilities being an EVOLUTIONARY ADAPTATION, formed in the course of the development of our human species.)
And yet, more and more often today we face with the reality that does not provide the chance to access the vast arsenals of this centuries-proven cognitive development tool to those eager to learn young minds. Among many examples, today public schools educators must struggle very hard in order to retain at least some kind of inadequate bits and pieces of creative education in CA, the world's most prosperous state. See the info re. most recent legislative battle against proposed Bill AB 2446 (furutani).
The evidence from the organized by Rozalina Gutman INT'L SYMPOSIUM on Int'l perspectives re. advocacy for music/arts education (part of the 29th World Conference of ISME, Int'l Society for Music Education, held in Beijing, China, in August, 2010, proved that
THE REASON THE SCHOOL SYSTEM LACKS THE SUBJECTS THAT TARGET ADVANCED COGNITION CURRICULA (INCL. MUSIC EDUCATION) IS LARGELY NOT DUE TO THE OFTEN CLAIMED LACK OF FUNDS, BUT IS RATHER BECAUSE OF THE LACK OF HIGHER AWARENESS RE. THE NEEDS OF THE FUTURE GENERATIONS, THAT ARE OFFERED THE SPRINGBOARD INTO THEIR FUTURE LIVES, WHILE IN TODAY'S SCHOOLS.
Maybe the reason for that is that we still measure the values in our contemporary world, while using archaic monetary system of a mere exchange marketpalce, that is unable to reflect the complexity of our today's reality, that fails to project the value of currently "invaluable", yet highly prescious substances like beauty, joy, sincerity, kindness, intellect, emotional intelligence, etc.?.. Maybe at times our currently highly manipulated political systems fail to allow the true leaders with the adequate mental capacities to possess the power of collective decision-making for the community?.. There are many other factors that contribute to the process that led to the currently significantly diminished music literacy in the most parts of the world, deeper and deeper effecting negatively the development of the brain, that inherites such changes and is being passed on from one generation after another, transforming our society with day-to-day cumulative effect into "autistically-minded", lacking emotional intelligence, compassion, creativity & higher awareness, yet more and more standardized world...
While we can not blame those community leaders, who are unable to appreciate experientially the value of music/arts education, due to their own lack of brain structure to process the above, we may not give up on using the scientific evidence that offers important guidelines for corrective measures for the current crisis of the school curricula disconnect with the demands of the future.
Today, it is not enough to merely practice our art, sharing it with the diminishing circle of admirers. It is the time to become pro-active and communicate to the public and community leaders the importance of the transformative effects of music-making practice on the formation of an individual mind and on the state of the global conscience.
That is why, we've got inspired to communicate about all these issues and to inspire more curiosity through an unusual song that communicates important info in the entertaining music form, simply putting music's powers to the action.
We extend our invitation for you to join us today in our efforts to change the awareness about music and music/arts education in your community and throughout the global village. Help us carry out our urgent and important message by
- sponsoring and attending live performances that include the Campaign's Song "I CREATE, WHEN I RESONATE" by the performing groups and soloists.
- sponsoring the production of PUBLIC AWARENESS MESSAGES, in association with local performing/educational groups and renown artists, based on the original song "I CREATE, WHEN I RESONATE" and combined with the presentations by scientists and music education advocates.
- responding to the advocacy mailing campaign and attending live presentations and events, thus actively participating in the legislative process, by communicating your views to your elected representatives locally, nation-wide and responding to the global issues.
